Frequently Asked Questions:

What is a Doula?

A Doula is a Birth Professional who educates, empowers and supports women and their families during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
Pregnancy: A Doula provides in-home education and ongoing support for expecting parents, encouraging informed choice and healthy practices.  For in-depth education, see “Childbirth Education Services” below.
Birth: A Doula provides emotional and practical support, non-medical comfort measures for labour, confidence in the birth process, guidance for a better birth experience.
Postpartum: A Doula provides in-home visits, resources and support to parents in the early postpartum weeks to encourage a positive start to life with a new baby.

Why Should I Hire a Doula?

Studies show that the presence of a Doula reduces the use of medical interventions and increases parents’ satisfaction of their birth experience. Simply put, Doulas provide the support and knowledge women need to experience birth in a positive, empowering way. Doula support should not be considered a luxury, instead it should be viewed as a necessity.

Will a Doula Replace My Partner’s Support Role?

No! Doulas support women AND their partners. Doulas do not replace the partner’s role. Instead, Doulas support and empower the partners to confidently fulfill their role.

What is the difference between a Doula and a Midwife or Obstetrician?

Doulas are not medical professionals. They do not perform any medical or clinical tasks. Instead, they offer knowledgeable support to expecting parents and their families. They do this by empowering through education, comforting through hands-on pain coping techniques, encouraging through emotional support.
